Vacation’s all I ever wanted

If you know who sang that song, kudos to you! Anyway, I’m in the Outer Banks on vacation with my family. For those unfamiliar with it, it’s a looooooong stretch of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. They play an important role during hurricane season because they get hit with the brunt of storms while the inner coastline is more protected. There are tons of beaches around here (many of which are practically empty or the only other company you have are some wild horses). The Outer Banks is also the site of the Wright Brothers’ first successful flight from Kitty Hawk (where there are some massive sand dunes for elevation).

The house we are staying at is located in Duck, N.C., which happens to be one of the narrower stretches of the islands. Our house is facing Currituck Sound, and has its own pier for launching our kayaks. You can actually see the mainland in the distance if you squint your eyes. The ocean is within walking distance of our house, but I have yet to go there.

Tonight the sunset was beautiful, so I took a few pictures and video to share!

Good thing it’s free

I have started shopping at an actual make-up store! I don’t consider myself to be a girly-girl, but there are certain brands of makeup that I buy which can’t be found at the drugstore, so I go to Ulta. A few weeks ago on one such trip, I got $5.00 off my purchase because I agreed to a free InStyle magazine trial. I was just flipping through the latest issue, and due to sheer boredom, I decided to count the number of advertisements. There are 297 pages and 146 of those are adverts. That equates to about 49% of the magazine’s bulk. This just confirms that my already negative view  of fashion magazines is not unwarranted. I think the only part of the magazine that was actually useful was an article about summertime apparel and what SPF factor it would roughly translate to. For example, according to the magazine (which got its info from the Skin Cancer Foundation), a t-shirt would be SPF 4, a hat = SPF 5, an umbrella = SPF 3-10, and trees = SPF 5-10.

An observation

I was looking at a website a friend linked to me and came across this gem:

I think the phrase at the bottom adds a finishing touch, don’t you think? This advert was found on the blog, Friends of Irony.
